Book Spotlight: The Big Beasts of English Grammar – An Exploration of Form and Function in Conversations

Picture
Coming in mid-December 2024, The Big Beasts of English Grammar by Christian Jones and Graham Burton offers an eye-opening exploration into the grammar heavyweights of English—those “big beasts” like conditionals, modals, and reported speech that teachers regularly encounter in syllabuses and textbooks. But what do we actually know about how these grammar structures function in real conversations?
Drawing on a rich corpus of spoken language, Jones and Burton explore grammar in use, revealing key insights that challenge conventional grammar teaching. This book is particularly relevant for teachers, curriculum designers, and researchers who want to rethink grammar explanations and approaches to instruction. It sheds light on why and how grammar functions contextually, something often overlooked by traditional teaching methods. The book also provides practical ideas for incorporating spoken grammar into lesson plans, bringing grammar teaching closer to how language is used in real-world dialogue.

Scott Thornbury, renowned ELT expert, praises The Big Beasts of English Grammar, noting that it "will change the way we think about the canonical grammar syllabus." For anyone involved in language education, this resource will be invaluable in adapting grammar instruction to align with authentic usage.

This forthcoming title is part of the Positive Pedagogical Praxis Series—an essential addition for anyone seeking to elevate their understanding of grammar in conversation and enrich their classroom practices with fresh perspectives and data-driven insights. Read more...
