Chapter 11: What to Expect When You’re Expecting on the Job: Maternity Leave in Japan by Phoebe Lyon
Abstract
Phoebe Lyon illustrates the many different aspects of maternity and childcare leave as an educator in Japan. Her autoethnography acts as a vehicle for the author to reflect on her experience with the aim of helping others. The purpose of this chapter is to share questions that were important to the author in order to help others in a similar situation decide how they can best negotiate pre- and post-childbirth leave in Japan.

Phoebe Lyon (MEd) has over 20 years teaching experience and has been teaching at the tertiary level in Japan for over eight years. She is currently a Principal Lecturer at Kanda University, Japan, teaching in the English Language Institute. Her research interests include curriculum development and assessment, learner autonomy, and learner identity.
