Chapter 11: Tying It All Together: A Roadmap for Cultivating Critical Friendship

Abstract
This chapter will use examples from the book to highlight common trends across these critical friendships regarding professional development and reflective practice in Japan. The reader will leave with clear roadmaps on how to foster their own grassroots critical friendships, encourage others to create such relationships, and cultivate environments which encourage critical friendships on a larger scale.

About the Contributors
Jennie Roloff Rothman is Senior Coordinator of Teacher Professional Development in the English Language Institute at Kanda University of International Studies. She holds a Master’s degree in TESOL from Teachers College Columbia University. She has been teaching in Japan since 2004.
Adrianne Verla Uchida has taught English in Japan since 2004. She is an Assistant Professor at Nihon University College of International Relations. She holds a Master’s degree in TESOL from Teachers College Columbia University. Her research interests include critical friendships, reflective practice and teacher identity.
