CHAPTER 6. Experimenting with English Learning Beyond the Remote Classroom
Fumiko Murase
Abstract
One way of helping students develop their autonomy is to engage them in learning English beyond the classroom in addition to their regular classroom learning, where they usually have easy access to support from their teacher and peers. By doing that, students can experience taking control of the whole learning process. Such an experience can help them to acquire the skills necessary for lifelong learning. However, how can this way of learning be integrated into remote teaching, where all learning takes place outside the physical classroom, and students have rather limited access to the teacher, peers, on-campus facilities, and other resources? Taking this question as a starting point, this study reports on a one-year project on promoting students’ autonomy by encouraging English learning beyond the classroom.
