Abstract
In this chapter, Chris Maschio draws on over ten years of experience in both business English and eikaiwa and challenges a number of prevalent assumptions about these teaching contexts. He paints a detailed and nuanced picture of the realities of teaching as an eikaiwa or business English instructor while also noting how these educational sectors have evolved over the last two decades.
About the Contributor
Christopher Maschio worked in the Business English division of a large eikaiwa school chain in Tokyo from 2003 to 2019. He has experience as a full-time business English instructor, language assessor, and material development specialist. His professional interests are extensive listening and task-based language teaching. He is currently teaching in Tokyo at a private language school and is a part-time lecturer at Hosei University. He holds an MA TESOL from Kanda University of International Studies, Japan.
