THREE: Learner Autonomy: The Students’ Perspective by Frank Lacey

Abstract
In this chapter I give a voice to my teenage students, who are subjected to my “autonomous classroom”. Too seldom do we hear the words of the students; how do they experience autonomy? Does it strengthen their learning? Do they see autonomy as “interesting and worthwhile”? I did this by giving four different 15-year-old students David Little’s six questions and asked them to answer them, without interference from me. Their answers were intriguing and told me something very important about my “teaching”.

Frank Lacey er sproglærer på Ådalens Privatskole i Ishøj. Han holder kurser med speciale i elevautonomi (et emne, som han er meget passioneret omkring). Han er desuden formand for engelsk fagudvalg i Danmarks Sproglærerforening. 

Frank Lacey is a Modern-Language Teacher in Denmark. He is an in-service instructor specialising in learner autonomy (a topic which he is rather passionate about) and is also chairman of the English section in the Language Teachers’ Association Denmark.
