Abstract
The understanding of the educational environment in Taiwan can be better understood by looking at its long-term immersion of Confucianism and the quarter-century long educational reform, implemented in the 1990s, following the democratisation of Taiwan that was initiated in the 1980s. New education policies were imposed in order to create a diversified and lifelong learning environment catering for a more creative and varied teaching context in Taiwan. Since Taiwanese society has been strongly influenced by Confucianism, the educational doctrines have always been more traditional and authoritarian. During the past thirty years, certain traditional educational beliefs have been called into question due to the modernisation and democratisation process calling for a more learner-centred approach to teaching. This article will address three major themes: how learner autonomy reflects or conflicts with Confucian teaching and learning principles; effects of different approaches utilised catering for autonomy with regards to the extent to which learners develop greater autonomy; and how learner autonomy could be seen as tangible and practical learning objectives in the teaching context in Taiwan.
