Introduction
Adrianne Verla Uchida and Jennie Roloff Rothman
Abstract
This chapter will introduce the process of compiling this volume, with particular focus on why the editors decided to write a book specifically on critical friendships, how it contributes to the field, and why we selected the relationships we included in the book as exemplars of critical friendships in ELT. It will also serve as a literature review for the book, exploring professional development in Japan and touching on the history of reflective practice, with brief references to typologies, tools, and principles. Following that, it will explain the concept of critical friendships, highlighting why they are particularly useful for teacher professional development, especially within the context of Japan.
Keywords: reflective practice, critical friendships, cultivating support, professional development
