Chapter 5: Bill’s Story. Love of Literature as a Motivation for Learning Japanese by Bill Fryer
Abstract
Bill’s story, in Chapter 5, shows how his love of Japanese literature and his language skills developed through reading. His example highlights the rewards of spending time developing reading proficiency in Japanese. In Sensei’s Tips we reiterate the informational and aesthetic benefits of reading and recommend it as a source of input. We discuss the practical issues of locating suitable reading material and the positives and negatives of using various tools to make texts comprehensible.
About the author
Bill began studying Japanese when he was thirteen, and later studied mathematics and Japanese at university. Before graduating he travelled to Japan to teach English for 18 months. After returning to Australia, he completed his Japanese language studies, including an honours degree. He then received a scholarship to study at a Japanese university for two years, where he obtained a master’s degree in Japanese literature. He returned to university in Australia to complete a PhD in Japanese literature and translation studies, and has worked as a translator for a medical technology company ever since.
