Chapter 12: Navarone’s Story. Talking About Me… by Navarone Feekery

Abstract
Navarone, in Chapter 12, speaks of the invisibility of language, content and role models in the Japanese curriculum to guide learners in expressing a homosexual identity. He describes how he independently found the language he needed and the social groups he related to online. In Sensei’s Tips we concur on the limited identities represented in learning resources and endorse Navarone’s proactive approach to researching the language to talk about homosexuality and interact using that language.

About the author
Navarone Feekery started studying Japanese when he was twelve years old and went on to major in Japanese and Korean at university. During that time he did a year-long exchange in Shimonoseki and a month-long summer course in Seoul. After graduation he found a job at an IT company in Tokyo where he now makes software applications for robots and works entirely in Japanese. In his spare time he reads, plays guitar, and teaches himself how to make cheap Japanese food.
