Chapter 7: Nothing About Us Without Us: Creating a Barrier-Free and Inclusive Teaching Environment for Students, Faculty, and Staff With Diverse Abilities

Abstract
Unity in Diversity (Inspiring Future Generations) is a research project and an undergraduate course which teaches students about race, ethnicity, gender, and disability. This chapter looks at one aspect of the project, which is teaching students about disability and inclusion. The chapter looks at ways in which students are taught to understand and respect people with disabilities and how to create an inclusive teaching environment for students with disabilities.
About the Contributors
Fiona Creaser is a Professor at the University of Kitakyushu. Her research field is gender, specializing in women’s empowerment and diversity. Fiona was born with one hand and uses the experiences she has had as a woman with one hand as a means to teach about disability awareness.
Naomi Yukimaru is an Associate Professor at the University of Kitakyushu. Her main research interests include teaching English to students with learning difficulties, teacher education, and women’s empowerment.
