Chapter 7: Claudette’s Story. Intermediate Blues by Oi Yee Claudette Chan
Abstract
Claudette’s story in Chapter 7 talks about her learning of Japanese as her third language and the challenges of making progress while working as a busy teacher in Japan. We explore the situation of intermediate level learners in Sensei’s Tips and look at ways to keep improving when progress is less apparent than at the elementary level.
About the author
Oi Yee Claudette Chan was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Australia with her family when she was seven years old. She grew up bilingual, speaking Cantonese Chinese and English. Her first exposure to learning Japanese was when she was in Grade 5 of primary school and she continued until Grade 8 in high school. She did not study it again until she took an elective Japanese course in the last semester of her undergraduate studies at university, where she majored in Mathematics. She worked as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) with the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET) in a rural Japanese town. Because of her continued interest in Japan and her background in Mathematics, she now works at a Japanese public secondary school that teaches the International Baccalaureate programme.
