Chapter 2. The Impact of Instructor-Structured Guidance on Enhancing Peer Review Effectiveness

Abstract
Collaborative learning in higher education takes various forms, including peer review, peer feedback, and peer assessment, all of which play a crucial role in enhancing students’ academic skills. Among these, peer feedback is a widely used approach that fosters literacy development, improves content quality, and facilitates students’ integration into academic communities. By critically evaluating their peers’ work, students develop subject-specific competencies, refine their writing, and strengthen their critical thinking and audience awareness. However, the effectiveness of peer feedback depends on careful instructional design and alignment with course objectives. A well-structured peer review system—incorporating workshops, detailed rubrics, reflection, and guided discussions—enhances students’ abilities as both writers and reviewers. This structured approach promotes a more engaging and supportive learning environment, ultimately enriching the academic writing experience.

Tamilla Mammadova, an Assistant Professor in Humanities and Social Sciences at ADA University, Azerbaijan, coordinates the Academic Writing and Information Literacy program. Esteemed for her extensive international expertise and scholarly excellence, she holds a PhD from the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Among her recent book publications is Academic Writing and Information Literacy Instruction in Digital Environment published by Palgrave Macmillan, 2022.
