Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long will the process take?
A: It depends on the authors, the nature of the title and the level of support needed, but from a rough first draft to the published ebook could take anything from three months. See this PDF document for a sample timeline.
Q: Are there any fees for authors?
A: C&M does not charge for normal services associated with publishing an ebook, e.g. advice, feedback, support, cover design, professional copy editing, final manuscript preparation, and marketing.
Q: How do I format my ebook?
A: Please keep the formatting very simple to allow the ebook to be read on different devices. Here is a style guide. We can also send you an example.
Q: When do authors receive royalty payments?
A: Royalties are issued once per year in February (calculated up to the the end of the preceding December), along with clear statements.
Q: What is the royalty rate for authors?
A: Authors receive a competitive royalty rate, normally between 6% and 12% on the net revenue received for each copy of the book sold (and this will be stated in the contract).
Q: Are royalties earned when a book is borrowed from an elibrary?
A: C&M are still negotiating rates with elibraries, but it is anticipated that authors will receive the same royalty percentage on any net revenue earned on titles being borrowed from elibraries.
Q: How will the books be marketed?
A: C&M will market the books through social networks, blogs, conferences and through the distribution of sample copies. Authors can greatly increase the success of a book with additional marketing of their own, so this is encouraged.
Q: How do you prevent illegal downloding or free sharing of ebooks?
A: C&M cannot completely avoid downloading or free sharing, however, this kind of activity tends to occur when a title is unavailable or prohibitively expensive. As all of our texts will be affordable and readily available, we anticipate that illegal downloading will be minimal. By partnering with ebook distributors such as Amazon, Apple, Kobo, Sony and elibraries, we provide a safe, easy and accessible way to access our ebooks. If you notice that our ebooks are being made available freely, please contact us immediately.
Q: Will print versions of the ebooks be available?
A: C&M is an epublishing company and the texts have been written with interactivity in mind. However, if readers wish to obtain a print copy of a text, then we plan to partner with an inexpensive "print on demand" company to provide that service. In that case, all arrangements should be made with the partner company and C&M will not be involved in such a transaction at all.
Q: How much will the ebooks cost?
A: Based on research of the market rate for academic ebooks, C&M anticipate that the ebooks will cost between ten and twenty US dollars. This will be monitored closely and may fluctuate.
